In En alerte, by Moroccan choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou, speech dominates the stage as much as the body. Accompanied by two musicians (Maalam Jawad et Mathieu Gaborit), the choreographer makes contemporary Arabic poetry resonate. The performance draws its energy from the powerful words of Mahmoud Darwich’s poem Madîh al-Zill al-‘Alî (“A Eulogy for the Tall Shadow”), a reflection on existential questions written by the Palestinian poet during the Siege of Beirut in 1982.

Carried by its singular stage presence, Taoufiq Izeddiou work is a spiritual journey to the very heart of today’s troubled world.
