The Speaking Tent (Music Temple)

Emi Honda and Jordan Mckenzie (Montréal)

February 25 to March 2, 2013

Interdisciplinary
February 25 to March 2, 2013
World premiere

In the “shaking tent” ritual widely practiced by the Ojibwa, Innu and Cree, medicine-men communicate with the invisible spirit world. Set in a quasi apocalyptic landscape, The Speaking Tent (Music Temple) as envisioned by Emi Honda and Jordan McKenzie invents a new language inspired by chaos theory as observed in nature. Composed of looped images and analog sound samples, this multimedia installation incorporates urban objects, miniature rotating sculptures and deconstructed and reconstructed technology. This lo-tech mechanized installation will provide the soundtrack to the duo’s latest video narrative, manipulated on-site by these new contemporary shaman.

Emi Honda is an urban gleaner whose immersive environments create a fantastic landscape. A visual artist, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Honda is a member of the pop-indie-folk-experimental duo Elfin Saddle with Jordan Mckenzie. A video maker, multi-instrumentalist and sound and visual artist, Jordan Mckenzie is a bearer of Cree culture. The environmental concerns of this pair of artists have given rise to a number of works denouncing our civilisation’s overconsumption. Exhibitions of their work have been presented mostly in Canada. In 2009, the video Wurld was shown at the Vienna International Film Festival (Viennale). This past summer, Elfin Saddle set out on a major European tour (at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Buz’art Festival in Geneva, etc.).
