Love is a Whole Other Creature
Maia Iotzova (Montréal)
3 - 11 feb.
Résidence conjointe PRIM-MAI
Vernissage : Friday February 3, 5 p.m.
In the multi-channel video installation Love is a Whole Other Creature, Maia Iotzova presents facets of a world of love, as 60 individuals from Sofia, Montreal, Toronto, and Rijeka tell us what love means to them. Interspersed throughout are images from the artist’s life and world. The dispersion of moving images through the gallery space loosely figures the participants’ geographical distribution, and the attempt to bridge the distance is none other than an attempt to understand one-another for the nuances each can bring to the picture.
Originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, Maia Iotzova is a Montreal-based filmmaker and media artist. Much of Iotzova’s work to date, including video documentaries and web-based projects, has dealt with our intimate relationship with urban nature, not the landscaped parks, but the unkempt or sometimes abandoned “vacant” lots. The subject of love entered her artistic explorations when she realized that even though “wild” the space she explored needed our loving care. The question emerged, how do we love something without trying to control it.
